Holistic Support for LGBTQ+ Asylum Seekers

Emmaus Christian LGBTQ+ Asylum Seeker & Refugee Support, est. 2018, offers a compassionate sanctuary for those forced to flee their homeland due to their sexuality. Through fortnightly meetings, we empower individuals to vocalize their journeys, fostering independence and self-advocacy. Our Christian ethos drives a commitment to truth, aiding in providing accurate recounts to the Home Office, facilitating fair decisions. When needed, we stand by our members in court. Upon receiving Leave to Remain, we continue to aid in their integration, making the UK a welcoming home.

FAQs

Common questions about our support for LGBTQ+ asylum seekers.

Who is eligible for your support services?

Our services are available to LGBTQ+ asylum seekers and refugees. While we are a Christian organisation, we welcome everyone regardless of their background.

What is the frequency of your support services?

Every two weeks, we gather online to provide assistance and direction to participants. Additionally, we maintain a WhatsApp group, and Rev'd Dave is available for support at various other times.

Do you offer assistance with legal processes?

We assist individuals in accurately conveying information to the Home Office and can provide evidence in court when required. Although we can help you find legal representation and offer assistance in court, we do not provide direct representation ourselves.

What happens after a person obtains Leave to Remain?

We support them in their employment search, accommodation setup, and their general transition to living in the UK.

What if my case isn't clear?

We will provide support and guidance, including assistance at court (if appropriate), for individuals with unclear cases.

Can you provide assistance if I don't have faith?

We aim to help everyone, regardless of faith, who we are convinced about and support them in their journey. However, we do ask members to understand that this is a christian group and they will therefore hear about christianity.

Our group motto...

... The truth will set you free (John 8.32)

Who are Emmaus?

The story of the Road to Emmaus exemplifies the power of acceptance and recognition, especially when we pause to share experiences together.  In 2018, St Chad & St Mark's Church invited Rev'd David to create a supportive group for LGBTQ+ Asylum Seekers & Refugees within its congregation.  Originally based in Wolverhampton, the group has successfully transitioned to an online platform via Zoom, meeting every two weeks. It now reaches across England and includes participants from diverse locations such as London, Liverpool, Manchester, Brighton, Leicester, Nottingham, and Leeds, among others.

The primary goal of the group is to empower individuals to express their unique stories.  Each person's story is crucial, and Rev'd David provides his insights and skills to help them voice the traumas they have faced as well as the love they yearn for as members of the LGBTQ+ community.  Before offering support with specific cases, a thoughtful period of discernment is undertaken to ensure that Rev'd David feels confident in his decision to assist. Thus, while support cannot always be assured, guidance will always be provided wherever possible, whether before a Home Office interview, in court, or afterward if Leave to Remain is granted or denied. Now entering its seventh year, the group continues to flourish, fostering strength and love among its members.
