Our Story

How It All Started?

In 2018, Rev'd Ray Gaston from St Chad & St Mark’s Church in Wolverhampton reached out to Rev'd David Babbington after noticing that numerous parishioners identified as LGBTQ+. These individuals were dealing with the intricacies that link faith and sexuality, while also confronting difficulties as either Asylum Seekers or Refugees.

After their first conversation, a meeting was arranged with three potential members.  Espoir, Festus, and Guy quickly became key supporters in forming this exceptional group.

The decision was made for the group to meet biweekly at St Chad and St Mark's Church.  This group aimed to cultivate a distinctive atmosphere, committed to embracing a 'holistic' approach. It intended to tackle every aspect of a person's life instead of merely concentrating on their asylum applications.  By exploring their stories, recognising their needs, evaluating their mental health, and understanding their support systems, the group aimed to establish a familial environment. They pledged to offer steadfast support during the asylum application journey and after it. If members were granted their leave to remain, the group would help them navigate welfare and employment systems; conversely, if their applications were rejected, support would remain as they considered their next moves. Thus, ‘Emmaus’ was created, with the goal of providing a pathway for individuals to reconcile their sexuality and faith while processing suppressed emotions and genuine longings. This was made possible by cultivating a secure, inviting, confidential, and inclusive social environment centered on prayerful support at St Chad & St Mark’s Church.

As COVID arose, face-to-face meetings became unfeasible, leading the group to shift to an online format.  They have continuously gathered every two weeks, adhering to their initial timeline. This unexpected transition has been transformational, as the group, initially based in the Midlands, now extends its outreach and ministry nationwide. We have even received requests for advice and assistance from individuals located overseas.

Our goal within the group is to assist members in welcoming their sexuality as a divine blessing rather than perceiving it as inherently sinful. In the UK, there exists a thriving movement of LGBTQ+ Christians and allies who champion this viewpoint. While this perspective isn't unique, our distinctive approach is what keeps members engaged over many years. After all - we are a family.

It’s essential to highlight a key principle that underpins our dedication to supporting individuals. We do not guarantee support letters for everyone. Members must have consistently participated for at least six months, and Rev'd David must be assured of the accuracy of his statements. This practice is based on our conviction that '...the truth will set you free!'
